Aaron Kanter is a poker player from Lodi, California who finished fourth in the 2005 World Series of Poker Main Event. He received the nickname of “Giant Killer” for taking down poker pro after poker pro at the main event, often having the worst hand and lucking out on the river. He has knocked out Phil Ivey in this fashion, and also severly crippled Greg Raymer. Kanter’s luckiness has caused him to get a reputation as a bad poker player in some circles. Aaron Kanter made it to 4th place out of 5,617 players that year, winning $2 million in the process. Aaron Kanter was 27 at the time.
Like many competitors in WSOP today, Aaron Kanter made his way into the tournament via online WSOP satellite tournaments. This has also contributed to his bad rep.
Aaron Kanter’s 4th place finish in the 2005 WSOP Main Event could have been considered a fluke if it wasn’t for the fact that he has finished in the money in ten major tournaments. After his WSOP performance, the largest tournament in which he has placed in the money was the WPT PokerStars Caribbean Poker Adventure, where he won $17,787 for his 48th place finish.
When talking with his father, Mitch Kanter, Aaron Kanter revealed one of his poker philosophies. This philosophy is that if the pot is huge, he feels that he can’t afford to not be involved. This may not be a wise strategy, and it probably contributes to his bad reputation, but it seems to work for him.
