Alan Goehring turned to poker after retiring from his job as a junk bond analyst and trader. He was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on February 21, 1962, and turned to poker at age 37. Alan Goehring’s first big win was before he turned pro, when he won the $3,000 No Limit Holdem event at the 1997 World Series of Poker, collecting $61,845 for his victory. Goehring now lives in Henderson, Nevada.
However, Alan Goehring has had difficulties in heads up play, earning him a reputation of not being able to win it all. Goehring won $768,625 when he placed second in the 1999 World Series of Poker Main Event. Noel Furlong beat out Alan Goehring in the Main Event to deprive Goehring of a spot on the Wall of Fame. He followed up this second place finish with several more, creating Goehring’s reputation.
However, Alan Goehring finally threw off the curse that had been following him when he won the World Poker Tour $25,000 Season 1 Championship, defeating Kirill Gerasimov of Russia in heads-up play to take home $1,011,886. His victory was even more impressive when you look at the other members of the final table, members with names such as Ted Forrest, Phil Ivey, and the legendary Doyle Brunson.
Since then, Alan Goehring has made several more WPT final tables and won the LA Poker Classic at the Commerce Casino in WPT season 4, earning $2,391,550.
Alan Goehring proclaims himself to be a “poker hobbyist” and not a professional, but his over $5 million in tournament winnings say differently. At the poker table, he can frequently be seen wearing extremely large black sunglasses.
