Dan Harrington is a poker player who has given himself the nickname “Action Dan,” despite the fact that he is a very conservative player. Dan is known for having tighter starting hand requirement than most pros, but when he does play, he is to be feared as an aggressive player who has the ability to fold when he knows he is beaten.
Born on December 6, 1945 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Action Dan Harrington worked as a bankruptcy lawyer and utilizes his business and financial knowledge at every opportunity. At the 1995 World Series of Poker Main Event, Dan made it to the final table. He promptly offered a 9-way deal saying that they could all invest the money and become rich. The deal was shot down, but Dan kept offering the deal after each eliminated player, even offering investment counseling. Dan Harrington ended up winning the tournament and the $1 million first prize, becoming the world champion.
Dan Harrington has also made three other WSOP Main Event final tables, with a sixth place finish in 1987, a third place finish in 2003, and a fourth place finish in 2004. Action Dan has made one World Poker Tour final table, finishing second in the 2005 Doyle Brunson North American Championship.
Dan Harrington is good at games besides poker. He is also a former backgammon champion and a former U.S. Chess Master. Harrington has written three books about poker, Harrington on Hold'em: Volume I: Strategic Play, Harrington on Hold'em: Volume II: The Endgame,and Harrington on Hold'em: Volume III: The Workbook. Dan Harrington has won almost $5 million in tournament winnings to date.
