Mel Judah was born in Calcutta, India in 1947. He learned poker as a teenager but had never intended to make it his career. Instead he chose to become a hairdresser and moved to England. Mel Judah believes that his hairdressing career has helped him understand the psychological aspects of poker, as hairdressing requires a lot of social interaction.
Mel Judah still played poker while working as a hairdresser, and made several trips to Las Vegas to play in the tournaments there. In 1989 Mel won his first World Series of Poker bracelet by winning the $1500 Seven Card Stud event. He won a second WSOP bracelet in 1997 in the $5000 Seven Card Stud event. He came close to winning a third bracelet in 2003, but couldn’t quite make it. Mel has finished in the money 34 times at the WSOP, including a 3rd place finish in the WSOP Main Event in 1997. Stu Ungar won the Main Event that year.
In 2003 Mel Judah won the World Poker Tour Legends of Poker event, earning almost $600,000. At the table Mel Judah has a nickname of “The Silver Fox.” He also shares this nickname with another poker pro, Peter Costa. Mel has won nearly $3 million in tournament winnings. He currently lives in London.
